TeachFirst

TeachFirst is a social enterprise programme which aims to address educational disadvantage by linking graduates with selected schools. TeachFirst entrants are placed for two years in schools, during which time they complete a PGCE, and are offered additional leadership skills training and an optional master’s degree.

The destination of TeachFirst trainees after programme completion varies – the programme is designed to prepare graduates either for a longer-term teaching career or for other opportunities. TeachFirst is the largest recruiter of graduates across the UK for this reason. Over time, the programme has placed more than 10,000 teachers in low-income areas, supporting more than one million children.

TeachFirst graduates are placed within the Derby Opportunity Area at Derby Moor, where we have more than ten trainees at various stages of their two-year programme or as permanent staff.

Other Spencer Academies Trust schools meet the criteria for TeachFirst placements, with more than half of pupils from the poorest 30% of families. We are actively exploring opportunities to offer placements across the Trust, and to extend our relationship with TeachFirst.
