Portland Spencer Academy

Portland Spencer is a highly-regarded primary academy in the Bilborough area of Nottingham. An Ofsted review in 2017 found the school to be ‘good’ with elements of ‘outstanding’, singling effective leadership and support for individual personal development, behaviour and welfare out for praise.

The report concluded that a drive for excellence led by school leaders had brought about ‘rapid and continuous improvement across the school.’ The curriculum was identified as another source of strength, particularly effective at preparing children ‘to be confident and responsible for their futures.’

The curriculum is supported by excellent facilities. Portland has extensive grounds with two playgrounds, a trim trail and tyre play area. The school makes full use of the space with each classroom having a dedicated outdoor area. Outdoor spaces are used to explore extra learning opportunities, providing an extra layer to exploration of the curriculum. As a result of the learning opportunities offered to them, children feel assured and valued, and the atmosphere is warm and supportive.

With a catchment including a higher than average number of pupil premium and free school meals children, the focus is on wrap-around provision. A breakfast club and variety of after-school activities are offered, and help to support attainment. Parent and community volunteers are active supporters of the school, and provision is extended to parents wherever possible. In 2017-18, this has included community learning support for nutrition, literacy and numeracy.
