“Aspire, learn, and achieve”

Heanor Gate is a medium-sized secondary academy in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire. The focus is on aspiration and attainment, with a range of guidance and support programmes designed to help every student achieve to the best of their ability.

Standards are high, and expectations for behaviour and commitment to learning correspondingly clear. Students are encouraged to consider EBacc subjects, and modern foreign languages are placed at the heart of the curriculum.

An Ofsted report conducted before Heanor Gate joined the Trust found the school to be requiring improvement. With strong leadership and Trust support, the quality of teaching has improved, and exam results turned around. Heanor Gate is now rated as ‘good’ across all assessment categories.

The recent inspection report noted that principal Steve Huntington had ‘brought about significant improvement in a short period of time,’ and had been supported by a strong senior and middle leadership team. Pupil progress, attainment in previous underachieving groups including disadvantaged pupils, and sixth form provision were other areas singled out for recognition.

Sixth form provision is based on a wide-ranging subject offer designed to suit students intending to go on to further study and to other destinations including employment. Links with local employers and industry are correspondingly strong.
