Governance and Scheme of Delegation

The Spencer Academies Trust is a company limited by guarantee and a charitable trust. Responsibility for the academies that make up the trust and for the funds granted for the purposes of providing education in those academies is entrusted to the Board of Trustees, known internally as the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors works through committees, including the scrutiny sub-committees which meet at least once a term. Committees making recommendations to the Board of Directors are:

  • Quality and Standards Committee
  • Audit and Risk Committee
  • Resources Committee

Local Governing Bodies

Each individual academy within the Trust has a Local Governing Body (LGB), which is also a sub-committee of the Board of Directors. The LGB plays a key role in the life of each Academy and is responsible for maintaining academy links at the centre of community life.

The Trust greatly values the work of Local Governing Bodies, and is appreciative of the contribution that local scrutiny makes to excellence in governance and as part of raising standards. To support this, the Trust provides support to LGBs including governor recruitment, training, and information services. This includes equipping LGBs with the key performance, compliance and budgetary data required to provide effective scrutiny.

Local Governing Bodies recommend their budgets for approval to the Trust. The Trust is responsible for providing centralised services including strategic management and school advisory support, ICT, HR, project management and compliance support. Additionally, the Trust provides strategic oversight of financial control and strategy through the sub committees of the Board of Directors.
